Besides the fact that high sugar consumption can provoke non-communicable disease, it appears that high-fructose diet also sabotages learning and memory
Around 74% of industrial meals found in supermarkets contain added sugar, what people usually don’t know while doing their shopping
Here is an experience showing the devastating impact of high sugar consumption: besides increasing the risks of developing non-communicable disease such as diabetes, cancer, hypertension, sugar causes brain slowdown by affecting the abilities of learning and memorizing.
Fernando Gomez-Pinilla and Rahul Agrawal, two researchers at the University of California set up this experience. Two groups of rats are being tested : they will consume a solution of glucose-fructose daily during six weeks, the only difference being that one of the two groups will also being fed daily with DHA omega 3 (Docosahexaheonic acid*). All rats of the two groups had been trained to find their way in the maze before the first day of the experience begins.
After six weeks of consuming this solution, the rats who were having also DHA were able to find their way very quickly, if not faster than before the experience had begun. It took longer to the other rats to find their way, showing a weaker synaptic activity and having developed resistance to insulin*. The solution which was given to the rats was made of cane sugar and glucose-fructose syrup, used in major part by food industry, so as to produce soft drinks, sauces, seasonings but also baby food for its sweetening power and its ridiculously low price.
Researchers found that Americans are consuming around 21.3 kilos of cane sugar per year, and almost 16 kilos of glucose-fructose syrup, which represents in total more than 37 kilos per year and per person. Fernando Gomez-Pinilla, researcher and author of the experience is also a member of the UCLA Brain Research Institute and Brain Injury Research Center, he specifies that the main culprit is the glucose-fructose syrup, providing us the fact that natural fructose coming from fruits containing many antioxidants is not dangerous at all.
*the polyinsaturated fatty acids which key roles are to insure membranes fluidity, contribute to the proper functioning of the brain (97% of the 14% of omega 3 in the brain are DHA), be involved in the transmission of nerve impulses is also indispensable to the retina of the eye (93% of omega 3 are from DHA). Sources of DHA can be found overall in fish oils, vegan people can feel reassured about that: we can also find DHA in linseed oil, rapeseed oil, spirulina, oilseed such as nuts and hazelnuts, almonds, flax seeds…

*Hormone which role is to regulate both blood sugar level and synaptic functions of the brain. Insulin’s role is to manage the use and storage of sugar necessary to treat thoughts and emotions.
