The truth about sugar and coffee shops
We saw previously that a can of Coca-Cola contained 7 sugar cubes, or 9 teaspoons of sugar.
Unfortunately it’s not the only one to blame, and we can find similar examples –even worse- overall among hot flavored drinks served in coffee shop chains. One in five of the population visits a coffee shop daily in the United Kingdom.
With an average of 8 million visits a day, Starbucks is by far the biggest chain crushing its competitors at a global scale.
Some of shocking figures related to this new industry and contents in sugar found into Starbuck’s famous hot beverages:
- The Starbucks Fruit-Grape with Chai, Orange and Cinnamon Venti is the one that contains the highest content in sugar: 25 teaspoons of sugar, it’s more than three times the maximum Adult daily intake of sugars which has been recommended by World Health Organization (7teaspoons a day)
- 98% of the 131 hot flavoured drinks analyzed by ActionOnSugar.org would receive a red high label for excessive content in sugar.
- Hot drinks that are said to be “healthy” which are sold in these coffee shops still contain a lot more than the daily intake of sugar recommended by WHO: for example, a Starbuck’s Chai Tea Latte Ventin (size extra-large) contains 13 teaspoons of sugar.
